1. The 10:1 Distance-to-Size Formula

The golden rule of physical QR code deployment is the 10:1 ratio: the scanning distance divided by 10 equals the minimum recommended width of the printed code.

If a customer is holding a business card at a distance of 10 inches (25 cm), the code should be at least 1.0 inch (2.5 cm) wide. If an advertisement on a subway wall will be scanned from 5 feet (60 inches / 150 cm) away while standing on the platform, the QR code must be at least 6.0 inches (15 cm) wide.

2. The Quiet Zone Margin Rule (4 Modules)

Every QR code must be bordered by a blank border known as the Quiet Zone. ISO/IEC 18004 specifies a minimum quiet zone width of 4 modules on all four sides.

If your QR code is a 25x25 grid, the total printable area is 33x33 module equivalents. Cropping right up to the black edge or letting text, borders, or background illustrations bleed into the margin causes smartphone image thresholding algorithms to miscalculate edge contrast, rendering the code unreadable.

3. DPI and Vector vs. Raster Resolution

For commercial printing (offset, gravure, or digital presses), images must be rendered at 300 DPI (dots per inch) minimum. A 1-inch PNG at 72 DPI will have blurry, anti-aliased gray pixels along the module boundaries, degrading camera edge detection.

Always export your production assets as vector SVG files. Vector paths scale infinitely without rasterization artifacts, guaranteeing mathematical edge sharpness on commercial plate setters and high-speed laser plotters.

Substrate Warning

Avoid printing QR codes on high-gloss laminated paper or mirrored metal substrates if they will be scanned under direct spotlights; specular glare blinds smartphone image sensors.
